Hillary’s Telling Tales

Filed under: Politics — Vander Kitten @ 4:46 pm

Last week, Hillary Clinton made a pretty big public mistake by referencing RFK’s assassination when defending why she is still in the primary.  I understand why that was a problem for a lot of people, but it made the other part of her argument all but ignored.  She argued that her husband didn’t lock up the nomination in ‘92 until June.

Fact check provided here.

I took this picture.

What’s worse?  The misspelling or the fact that they have a “sauce and dipping policy”?

My Day at the Newspaper

Filed under: Work — Vander Kitten @ 9:28 pm

My 12-year-old self might have been sad today.   I spent the day at the San Francisco Chronicle*, in an all-day meeting for the Yahoo! Newspaper Consortium.  The meeting was productive, I worked with smart and talented people, and we ended ahead of schedule.  All in all, that’s a successful meeting day.

Edwards Endorses Obama

And he did in my hometown, no less. Some nice press for Grand Rapids.

One of the best parts about this endorsement is the timing: the story will now be the endorsement, instead of Hillary’s WV win.   Do you all see why I am such an Edwards’ fan?

How About That?

I’m not often surprised by the Vatican, but I am today.

The most interesting part of this article (to me) is the following bit:

“The Bible ‘is not a science book,’ Funes said, adding that he believes the Big Bang theory is the most ‘reasonable’ explanation for the creation of the universe. The theory says the universe began billions of years ago in the explosion of a single, super-dense point that contained all matter.”

Just when I think I know someone, they go ahead and do something like this to surprise me.

The Malarkey of Economists

Filed under: Politics, Rants — Vander Kitten @ 9:49 pm

Hillary won Indiana– barely.

I have some more vacation topics to share, but have to take a break to say this about Hillary Clinton:  what the hell?!

Things I don’t get about the Hillary campaign these days:

  • A surprising number of her supporters say they won’t support Obama in a general election.   Do they realize what the alternative is?  They might not, since her major trump card as of late she borrowed from McCain.  (see more below)
  • She has loaned her campaign $11.4 million this year.  Her campaign spins this as her dedication to staying in the race, instead of as what I see it to be: she has no chance in keeping up with the record-breaking fund-raising of the Obama camp.
  • Here’s the biggest thing I don’t understand:  Hillary’s support of McCain’s proposed gas tax holiday.  First, this is not her idea.  She picked this up from McCain.  Secondly, she was recently asked what she thought about the fact that not a single economist supports the gas tax as a good idea.  Her answer?  “Well, I’ll tell you what, I’m not going to put my lot in with economists.”  Good call, Hillary.  Economists spend their careers studying the economy, stupid.  (Oh, yeah, I think you forgot that mantra, Clinton camp.)  Thanks to Kevin Drum for that gem of a quote.

Can we PLEASE move on with this campaign?

A Few Very Happy Days

Filed under: Travel — Vander Kitten @ 9:04 pm

Once again, writing from our lanai.  This time, I am horribly sunburned.

Since my last post, we have had periods of relaxation “interrupted” in the kindest way by various adventures.  Today we explored the West Shore, including the drive up Waimea Canyon Drive, to see the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”  On our way, we found (with help from the best guidebook ever) the “Biggest Little Town” in Kauai, Hanapepe.  The guidebook actually beats it up a little, focusing on how the town is so run down and “a shadow of its former self.”  We took to the town quite nicely, actually.  It is basically just one street, but houses more art galleries than we’ve ever seen in Hawaii.  (There’s also a rustic swinging foot bridge that I’ll share pictures of as soon as I upload them.  Brave Chrispy- who hates bridges– did very well on it.)  We visited a local surf shop, where we had great conversation with the clerk about the proposed “Super Ferry,” and found a great book store where I picked up the Space Shuttle Operator’s Guide.  (I am unbelievably excited to dive into this.  It shows how they wash their hands, clean themselves, and eat, in addition to a hundred other questions I’ve had about life on a space shuttle.)  Also in Hanepepe, we found an adorable bakery, which had tacked to the front window a review and picture of their homemade apple pie.  Chrispy was drooling, so we decided to go back before leaving.  I ran in on our way out, only to find that they were out of apple pie.  But we have a piece of coconut-chocolate pie and a mango turnover waiting for us for after dinner tonight.  Yum.

After a couple more stops on the West Shore, we started on the drive up to see Waimea Canyon.  The road twists and climbs its way up to elevation of 4300 feet, and my motion sickness finally forced me into the driver’s seat.  We stopped now and then at lookouts, particularly those the guidebook had suggested.  This is truly gorgeous country.  It’s also drastically different from the shoreline climate.  As we climbed, we were engulfed in clouds now and then.  The view of the canyon was truly impressive, and the greens and reds contrasting against each other were breathtaking.  The final lookout, Pu’u o Kila Lookout, provided one of the most beautiful views of the Pacific I’ve ever seen- at least briefly.   We were so steeped in fog and low-lying clouds that we could only see the coastline every few minutes, during a break in the clouds.  The cloud cover would disappear within thirty seconds, reveal the gorgeous coast, and then cover the view once again.  It was like sport, trying to catch a view.  And it was an incredibly rewarding sport.

Today was the kind of vacation day I love to have with Chris: rambling, without plan, and highly enjoyable.  Oh! I almost forgot: on the guidebook’s advice, we stopped in Waimea at Jo-Jo’s Clubhouse for some shave ice.  I found it a little sweet by the end, but truly a lovely and ingenius treat. It’s basically a snow cone ON TOP OF ice cream.  Ingenius.

Other events we have been up to: Chris has taken two surf lessons, we’ve both started reading our new books, I spent time at the pool while he watched the Pistons win (hey, some things don’t change just because we are on vacation) and we did a lot of ocean swimming.  Oh yeah, and I fried my skin while watching yesterday’s surf lesson.

Finally, Chris had a birthday yesterday.  He took it very well and hasn’t given up his boyish charm, I’m glad to say.

Ok, more to come, I promise, but we are heading to dinner soon.  There is going to be an entire post about the restaurant choices on Kauai.  Trust me.

Yes, I Blog While on Vacation

Filed under: Travel — Vander Kitten @ 1:54 pm

Greetings from Kauai.
It’s gorgeous here. Some highlights from the first two days:

  • Hiking down the rock trail to Queen’s Bath, then swimming in the pool there.  (Thanks for the tip, Swebb!)
  • Watching Hubby surf today, while sipping coffee on the beach.
  • Morning yoga on the lawn facing the ocean.
  • Driving from South Shore to North Shore (to see Queen’s Bath) and stopping at a turn-out because we had an urge to jump in the ocean.
  • Visiting The Spouting Horn.
  • My heart returning to a normal rhythm after Hubby successfully cleared the cliff while jumping nearly 30 feet into ocean.
  • Blogging from our private lanai while listening to music with Hubby.

A couple of people have found it surprising that I have updated my Facebook status and checked e-mail while in Hawaii.  It’s what we do, Hubby and I.  We read the news on-line every day, we like to see what our friends are up to, and we keep others updated on what we do.  We like to stay connected.  I know Nin will understand.  So glad the Sheraton has free wi-fi.

Today we are a little low key, which is a perfect vacation day, if you ask me.  Yesterday was highly active, and it looks like the next couple of days will be too.  So today was a morning work-out for me, a morning surf lesson for Hubby.  Then while he watches the Pistons, I will head to the pool with the book I am starting today.  That is a great vacation day.

Hope you are all doing well in your respective parts of the world.  This little island is doing just fine.
